Go Ape at Matfen Hall is the ideal location if you're looking for an outdoor activity near Newcastle. You can choose from Treetop Challenge, a Goliath of a high ropes course with super-fast and super-high zip wires.
If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, why not try Axe Throwing? It's a perfect social activity which is both therapeutic and will get your competitive juices flowing as you take on the rest of your tribe.
It's our first location to be built within the grounds of a country house hotel and is nestled within one of the UK's most unspoilt areas of natural beauty. And is located just 15 miles west of Newcastle in the charming village of Matfen.

"The zip wires are amazing fun and the obstacles between the trees are a great challenge.
But the part you will not forget is the Tarzan Swing, which involves leaping from a platform attached to a cable that then swings you at speed into a cargo net, which you then have to climb up to get to the next stage.

Just 20 minutes from Newcastle you’ll find the National Park and a World Heritage Site. Newcastle has a couple of Go Ape claims to fame - it’s our only course with tree top crossings and activities designed and dedicated to local landmarks and it’s our first adventure to be built in the grounds of a country house hotel, Matfen Hall.
Once you’ve challenged yourself physically in the treetops and have your feet firmly back on the ground why not make a day of your time in the beautiful Northumberland countryside?
Head over to the picturesque village of Matfen with its lovely village green, stream and a pub if you fancy grabbing a bite to eat.
If you’re up for more physical activity Matfen Hall has a superb 27-hole golf course which is recognised as one of the finest in Northumberland.
If, on the other hand, you are physically done for the day then perhaps treat yourself to a relaxing session at the local spa.

Know Before You Go
- Wear sensible clothes for adventure.
- Footwear must be sturdy and suitable for the outdoors. No sandals, slip off shoes, open toes or heels.
- Gloves are a good idea. Either bring a pair or you can buy them at the cabin on the day.
