Celebrate National Grandparents' Day This September
On the 7th of September, grandparents up and down the country will be receiving special treatment from their beloved grandchildren in aid of National Grandparents' Day. This is the chance for you to say a big 'thank you' to your nans, granddads, grampys, grandmas...whatever you call them.
Yep. It's actually a thing.
Every year we celebrate Mother's and Father's Day, so we think it's only right that grandparents get their day, too. It's a way of showing how much you appreciate their time and patience, as well as their hearty home-cooked grub and interesting (if not extremely long) stories.
Our grandparents always make time for us; they spoil us and are always up for a bit of fun.
And so, they deserve a day when we make a fuss over them for once, right?
National Grandparents' Day has been celebrated in the US since the late seventies and was later introduced here in the UK back in 1990 by charity group Age Concern.
So, how can you celebrate National Grandparents' day?
If your nan and granddad are fond of the great outdoors, why not get them up out of their armchairs and out for a nice afternoon walk - perhaps in a local park or nearby nature reserve? If it's a nice day you could pack a picnic - just don't forget the flask of tea and a couple of biccies.
You could make them a card, bake them their favourite cake or even cook them a roast dinner, seeing as it'll be a Sunday. But, just sitting with them for a few hours, listening to their stories (even if you've heard them umpteen times before) and looking through old photographs is sure to make their day.
Or, do your grandparents have some adventure left in their bones?
If they do, why not give them a gift like no other by booking an afternoon in the tree tops? So long as they are reasonably fit and healthy, they can join you as you navigate tricky obstacles, tackle Tarzan Swings and whiz down a zip wire at the end of it all. Perhaps they'd rather keep both feet on the ground and enjoy our Forest Segway Experience.
