Days Out North Yorkshire

Not only does Go Ape at Dalby Forest give you that sense of adventure, it also gives you great views of the Great Yorkshire Forest and the Vale of Pickering. There are hill-to-hill zipwires, forest segways, high ropes, tunnels and bridges to keep you busy, but make sure you take the time to admire the scenery along the way too. And while you are there it seems a shame not to see what else the area has to offer. Here are a few suggestions for a perfect day out in North Yorkshire.

WHAT TO DO?

Eden Camp Museum.

Situated within a former Second World War prisoner-of-war camp, don't expect to find artefacts in glass cases at this museum. The museum itself is a piece of modern history and has retained many of the original huts used to detain prisoners of war between 1942 and 1949. Today, the huts are used to show the social and military history of WWII. There's also a war news reading room, a collection of military vehicles, a 'dig for victory' garden and a garden of remembrance.

WHERE TO GO?

Goathland.

Nestled between Pickering and Whitby, the village of Goathland is surrounded by the breathtakingly beautiful scenery of the North York Moors. Arrive in style on the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway and meander through the quaint streets. Pop into olde worlde shops and old-fashioned tea rooms and you will step back in time. Such is the charm and allure of the village that it has also set the scene for TV and film. If you were a fan of ITV's Heartbeat, you may recognise Goathland as the fictional village of Aidensfield. Or for any Harry Potter fans, Goathland railway station will pass more than a passing resemblance to Hogsmeade station.

WHERE TO EAT?

The Horseshoe Inn.

Five miles from Dalby Forest you'll find The Horseshoe Inn, located in the peaceful village of Levisham. This 19th century inn has earned itself a great reputation with food lovers and prides itself on sourcing local ingredients and produce. Whether it's breakfast, lunch or dinner you are after, the menu is varied, seasonal and caters for all tastes. Owned and run by brothers, Charles and Toby Wood, you are guaranteed a warm welcome and great service. And two miles down the road is its sister pub, The Fox and Rabbit Inn - a traditional country pub with views across the North York Moors.

AND SOMETHING FOR A RAINY DAY?

Nunnington Hall.

If the weather is a bit colder and wetter than you'd like, a trip to the stunning Yorkshire manor house of Nunnington Hall will keep you dry and fascinated in equal measures. Explore the period rooms and hear about the building's history and role as a much-loved family home. There's a gallery on the top floor that plays host to a number of art exhibitions. And head a little higher to the attic and you'll discover one of the world's best collections of miniature rooms. Back on ground level, if you're armed with waterproofs, you should head out to the idyllic, organic gardens too.
