Continue reading for our guide to the forest adventures and attractions that you’ll find on your day out to Go Ape Crawley.
There’s a lot that you won’t forget about your adventure on our Treetop Challenge course, and that includes our infamous Stirrups crossing. Having mastered the use of the equipment that will be securing you to the safety system, you’ll make your way up into the canopy by climbing a rope ladder. There you’ll find a network of platforms and crossings just like a video game, only primed for some real-life fun. When you reach the Stirrups you’ll find that the only infrastructure to help you between platforms is a series of small metal rings dangling from ropes that extend to a cable above your head. Not one for the faint hearted, you’ll need to muster all of the strength, balance and co-ordination that you can find to avoid dropping into your harness, doing the splits or ending up in a tangled mess. Throw in the thrill of stepping off a platform into thin air on our Tarzan swing and the euphoric feeling of soaring down zip wires, and you can be sure that your Go Ape adventure will be the highlight of your day out to Tilgate park.
Once you’ve experienced the forest canopy it’s time to get familiar with the sights and sounds of the forest floor. There no more fun way to do that than by Segway. Your hour-long experience begins with our instructors helping you to get familiar with the self-balancing machines. Your Forest Segway adventure then continues as you’re led out into the woods to our exclusive trails where you can put your new skills to the test. The three routes vary in difficulty and you have the freedom to take them at your own pace; will you cruise around soaking up the beauty of the forest, or open the taps and put the Segway through its paces?
You’ll also find a Treetop Adventure course at Go Ape Crawley. Perfect for young adventurers over 1 metre, the course begins with confidence building crossings that grow in difficulty. With a zip wire ride to finish each loop of the course children are sure to have a blast and end their experience feeling like a hero.
For those that would like to compliment their Go Ape adventure with activities at a slower place then Tilgate Park has a lot to offer. Stretching your legs on a stroll around the stunning woodland is made even more fascinating if you chose to follow the Tree Trail which takes in 30 different trees including Monkey Puzzle, Canadian Hemlock and Japanese Red Cedar. The Walled Garden should also be on your radar for a relaxing wander around the themed gardens and maze complete with a lookout tower. It’s also where you’ll find the café for bite to eat and a relaxing cuppa!
If you’re after something more active to complete your day out to Go Ape Crawley then we suggest some paddle sports. There's a plethora of watercraft to choose from; if you’re up for a bit of teamwork then head out onto the water in a rowing boat or canoe. Paddlers that prefer to go solo should opt for a sit on top kayak or stand up paddleboard for a bit more independence as you enjoy some time on the water and explore the corners of the lake. For the full team building experience book yourselves in for some raft-building, an instructor led experience where you’ll learn some new things about each other as well as some new skills, before taking your craft on it’s maiden voyage. With bike hire and an outdoor gym on-site there’s lots to keep you active all day long.
Tilgate Nature Centre is a great addition to the day for visitors of all ages. Divided into continental zones, everyone will be captivated by the fascinating animals on display. Watch the meerkats as they busily forage and play, pop by to spend some time with the noisy parrots then spot the serval as this African big cat hunts amongst the long grass. With brightly coloured cichlids, frogs, snakes and domestic animals amongst the many others that call the park home, there’s loads to discover.
