15 Team Building Ideas That Actually Work

Tested by 500K+ Teams

Trust falls nobody asked for or a PowerPoint about synergy. Sound familiar? Neither are the kind of thing that builds a team. Instead, try something that actually works - putting people metres high up a tree, handing them an axe (safely), or watching your directors get peppered by interns in game of Archery Tag. True team building isn't about forced fun. It’s about creating shared memories, stepping out of comfort zones, and encouraging authentic connection. Over the years, we have welcomed more than half a million teams through our forest gates. We know which activities get teams talking on Monday morning and which ones get quietly forgotten. Here are 15 that work, starting with the big-hitters.

15 Team Building Ideas That Actually Work
Go Ape activities: High-flying forest adventures

1. High Ropes - Treetop Challenge and Challenge Plus (for the really brave)

Your team, a network of rope bridges, zip wires and a Tarzan Swing or two, all suspended in the forest canopy. There's no need to fake confidence up here, everyone's outside their comfort zone and everyone's cheering everyone else on.

Why it works: Shared physical challenge builds trust faster than any icebreaker exercise. The person who talks the least in meetings is often the one calmly walking a wobbly bridge while everyone else grips the safety line for dear life, and that flips team dynamics in a good way.

Ideal team size: 6–100+ (runs in small groups on the course simultaneously)

Difficulty: Moderate to high. It's physically engaging and a head for heights helps, but harnesses and safety briefings mean anyone reasonably fit can do it.

2. Axe Throwing

Give a stressed-out team a target and an axe and watch the tension leave the arena. Structured, coached and surprisingly engrossing once you get the technique.

Why it works: It's satisfying, slightly chaotic and levels the playing field, seniority means nothing when the intern is out-throwing the MD. This one's social too, there's plenty of space to cheer each other on and catch up with colleagues between throws.

Ideal team size: 6–20

Difficulty: Easy to pick up, hard to master — that's the appeal.

3. Forest Segways

Swap the office chairs for heavy-duty, all-terrain Segways. Teams get an instructor-led training session before heading out to explore rugged, winding forest trails together.

Why it works: It forces people to zero in on the task in magnificant outdoor settings. Learning a brand-new skill alongside your work tribe breaks down corporate hierarchies instantly and leaves you buzzing. Plus, cruising through the woods is pure joy.

Ideal team size: 4–16

Difficulty: Easy to moderate — a few minutes of practice and most people are away.

4. Archery Tag

Dodgeball meets archery meets low-key department rivalry. Foam-tipped arrows, inflatable barricades and full permission to finally get Marketing back for all those emails (yep, we send a lot).

Why it works: Structured competition brings out the best in your team. Comradery and communication flourish as colleagues work together to take home the 'win'.

Ideal team size: 10–48 (splits into teams)

Difficulty: Easy to play, genuinely competitive once people commit. Watch out for the quiet ones.

5. Codebreakers Escape Room

Exclusive to Go Ape Battersea Park. A Go Ape themed puzzle experience where each team has to think, communicate and problem-solve to rescue to ape totem before the clock runs out. Watch the natural (and unexpected) leaders emerge and the lateral thinkers show their true colours.

Why it works: Nothing exposes and improves group problem-solving faster than a ticking clock and a competitive puzzle. Teams leave having actually practised communication, not just talked about it.

Ideal team size: 5–20. The puzzle room has 4 stations (teams) with a maximum of 5 people at each.

Difficulty: Moderate — mentally challenging, physically easy.

6. Ground-based Games

An instructor led series of low-stakes, high-energy challenges played firmly on the forest floor. Think giant puzzles, problem-solving challenges and blindfolded navigation mazes that dial the communication up to 11.

Why it works: The perfect accompaniment  to high-energy Go Ape adventures. It's all about thinking creatively, effective team dynamics and communication. Sure to uncover and nurture hidden skills.

Ideal team size: 6–50 (split into groups)

Difficulty: Easy to high — accessible to almost everyone but far from easy to conquer.

7. Baboonzled

The Go Ape giant boardgame that will test everything from your reflexes to your general knowledge, and your creativity to your courage. Moo-off anyone? (Yes, you will find out what that means).

Why it works: It shows you who steps up to lead, who collaborates beautifully and how the team handles a chaotic, fun challenge when the heat is on.

Ideal team size: 8–40 (split into teams)

Difficulty: Easy physically, engaging mentally.

8. Trash Free Trails Litter Pick (Corporate Volunteering)

A purpose-driven add-on where your team hits the forest paths to litter pick these stunning locations. By helping remove litter and protect local woodland ecosystems a CSR box-tick becomes an actual team activity with purpose behind it.

Why it works: Shared purpose beyond the day itself. Teams that do good together tend to feel good about each other, and it's not just a token gesture. Plus, there's space to chat, reflect and build relationships on a purposeful forest stroll.

Ideal team size: 6–100+ (runs in small groups whilst others are on the course)

Difficulty: Easy. A relaxed, low-intensity add-on.

9. Buggy Building

Not the one you put your toddler in, think more like a cross between a go-kart and Fred Flinstone's car, crafted by your tribe in the great outdoors.

Why it works: It's way more than just lashing together planks of wood and barrels, this activity will bring out the best in your work tribe and unite them as a team on mission to engineer (and pilot) the greatest vehicle ever known.

Ideal team size: 10–40

Difficulty: Moderate. Ground-based fun, but no-one said this would be easy.

10. Sharing Some Food Outdoors

Make the Go Ape Forest Shelter your basecamp for the day, it's the perfect place to unwind and share stories between your high-flying adventures and ground-based challenges. With breakfast, lunch and dinner options available, it's the opportunity to re-fuel and enjoy some great food and casual drinks together — kick off the day with a coffee, refresh at lunchtime and save the beers for after your activity.

Why it works: The real magic of team building often happens after the activity. Providing a relaxed space to wind down lets people unpack the day's highlights and build deeper connections.

Ideal team size: 20–100+

Difficulty level: Very easy (completely relaxing).

Don't just take our word for it

"Right from the first call we found all the team very knowledgeable and helpful. The communication between booking and the day was brilliant, help with the forms and also when payments were due.

On the day we went to Delamere forest and the weather was good. The safety briefing was delivered professionally and was helpful with questions. The actual course was harder than we thought but it was amazing, so much variety and challenges. It was a really good team building exercise as we all had to encourage each other and be supportive. There was plenty of laughs along the way and relief too that we completed it.

Thank you, highly recommended, the location was amazing. All the team were so friendly too."

More Outdoor Ideas for your Team Day

If you're planning a multi-day team event or want to expand your outdoor itinerary, these classic outdoor activities match perfectly with a trip into nature.

11. Woodland Walk and Reflection Session

Go Ape locations are in some truly gorgeous forests and parks, so a self-led wander through the woodland is the perfect way to bookend a high-adrenaline day with something calmer. A structured discussion prompt or two can help, and at our Forestry England locations you'll also find wellbeing trails.

Why it works: Gives teams processing time. The best insights from a team day often surface on the walk back, not during the activity itself.

Ideal team size: Any size

Difficulty: Easy

12. Wildlife Photography Scavenger Hunt

Armed with smartphones or digital cameras, teams explore the forest looking for a highly specific list of natural items, textures or wildlife interactions to capture.

Why it works: Work life is fast and loud. Giving your team explicit permission to slow down, breathe and appreciate the natural world together reduces stress and fights burnout.

Ideal team size: You'll need at least a couple of teams to make this one work.

Difficulty level: Easy.

13. Off-road Cycling

Make it your own and tailor the level to your group. Most Go Ape locations have bike hire available on site (from third-parties) and at a few locations we operate Forest Biking. All of our forests are ideal for a gentle pedal, but we also share our homes with some of nation's best off-road trails, including; Glentress Forest near Peebles, Haldon Forest in Devon and Whinlatter Forest in the Lake District.

Why it works: Easily accessible and to tailor to your group. Head out for a gentle pedal or test your limits on single-track trails. Plus, getting active amongst nature is proven to boost well-being.

Ideal team size: Up to 40 depending upon cycle availability

Difficulty level: Easy to high — you set the level.

14. Alpaca Walking

Stick with us on this one. Getting up close to these fascinating creatures and exploring stunning woodland provides the perfect escape from the fast-paced world of work. You can find alpaca walking operated by third parties at 3 Go Ape locations (Grizedale, Southampton and Whinlatter Forest) and a short drive from a further 6.

Why it works: It's the opportunity to decompress from corporate life, unlock the benefits of animal interaction and create shared memories with your work tribe.

Ideal team size: Varies by provider, but typically up to 12

Difficulty Level: Easy.

15. Disc golf

A brilliant blend of golf and frisbee where teams navigate a forest course, throwing specially weighted discs into elevated metal basket targets in as few throws as possible.

Why it works: It's completely low-pressure and highly social. Because the game is played while walking together from hole to hole, it leaves plenty of room for casual chatting, gentle ribbing and celebrating those rare, perfect long-distance throws.

Ideal Team Size: 4 to 20 people (split into small groups)

Difficulty Level: Easy.

The Bottom Line

In our experience, the best team-building days mix genuine challenge with shared silliness and proper downtime. Pick the right combo for your group and you've got a day your team won't just enjoy but will bring them together and get them flowing.
