Fun Things to Do in the Summer Holidays

Published on: 02/08/2024

The summer holidays are here and, no matter the weather, it’s time for some fun and adventure!

With 6+ long weeks to fill, it’s important to balance, fun, creativity and relaxation to recharge ready for a new school year. Check out our handy guide to keep your kids entertained all summer long.

Get adventurous

Go Ape

You guessed it, we decided to begin with the adventurous options. And… what better adventure option than a Go Ape experience? Across our 37 locations, there are adventures for all ages that are sure to get your heart racing and leave you with unforgettable memories.

Everyone over 1m tall can go wild on tree top adventures filled with zips, tricky crossings and even Tarzan Swings! There’s the bounce-tastic Nets Adventure for thrill-seekers over 1 year old. Or if you prefer something closer to the ground, why not try our Forest Segways experience, Axe Throwing or our latest addition, Archery Tag at Go Ape Dalkeith.

Every activity has specific age, height and supervision ratios.

Camping

Spending a night sleeping under the stars is often a core childhood memory. No matter how old we are, camping adventures allow us to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with nature. Roasting marshmallows over a campfire, telling stories, and cosy sleeping bags, what’s not to love?

If you can’t get away, why not try pitching a tent in your own back garden for a fun evening outdoors which is also close to home!

Join a Free Sports Club

Looking for budget-friendly options? Free sports clubs for kids are a great option! Many communities offer sports clubs during the summer months, where kids can take part in activities like football, hockey, tennis and cricket.

They’ll not only stay active, but also make new friends and learn new skills. This is a great way for kids to enjoy the summer holidays without breaking the bank.

Explore your local area

Prefer a more relaxed approach to staying active? Now is the perfect time to get to know your local area better and plan in some day trips. In the UK we’re lucky to have beautiful countryside, stunning coastlines, and many picturesque towns and villages. Summer is the perfect time to go hiking, explore sandy beaches and instil a love of nature in your kids.

Top Tip

Add in some games as you explore to keep your kids entertained. If you’re by the sea you could teach them to skip stones, or you could play pooh sticks on a country walk. It’s always handy to bring along a ball or frisbee too.

Art and Culture

Get Crafty

  • Paint pebbles and rocks to brighten up your garden – and have lasting memories of your adventures.
  • Make your own bookmarks using materials already around the house. Challenge them to get creative and think outside of the box.

  • Get your hands dirty together in the garden! You could even have a flower growing competition.

  • Create a bug hotel to help nature flourish in the garden.

  • Even more inspiration.

Get reading

Children Reading magazine at Go Ape location

It can be difficult limiting screen time in the summer holidays, but reading is a great alternative activity. Many libraries organise summer reading challenges and workshops for children, which can be a fun way to get them interested in reading. One good book or series could spark a life-long love of literature. You can even encourage them through magazine and comics to pave the way.

Historical and cultural day trips

It’s amazing how many historical and cultural venues we pass by daily. From your local area to staycation hotspots, there are so many fascinating places to visit in the UK.

Why not look online to discover what shows, festivals or exhibitions are on nearby you? Or keep an eye out for anything further afield, for a treat day.

Free Local Events

Remember to check the calendar of events in your area. Many towns and cities host free events during the summer, like music festivals, outdoor movie screenings, and exhibitions.

Rest and Relaxation

Sometimes, the best way to spend the summer holidays is by simply enjoying time at home. Whether you’re looking to unwind or have a relaxing day indoors, there are plenty of activities to keep you entertained.

Get Baking

If you’re feeling creative, why not try your hand at baking and cooking? Experiment with new recipes, make delicious treats, or even have a family cook-off. It’s a wonderful way to spend time together and enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Board Games

One great way to enjoy quality time with family and friends is by playing board games. Dust off classic favourites like Monopoly, Scrabble, or Cluedo, and challenge each other to a friendly competition.

Movie Nights

On those lazy summer evenings, why not have a movie night? Gather everyone together, have some popcorn, and watch your favourite films. Whether you choose a classic, a comedy, or an action-packed adventure, movie nights are a fantastic way to relax and escape from reality for a while.

Just like one of our legendary crossings, high up in the trees, it’s all about balance! The Summer holidays are the perfect time to get outside and treat yourself to an unforgettable Go Ape adventure - but don’t forget to relax and recharge as well.
