Common Toad

Latin name: Bufo bufo

Size: up to 15cm

Lifespan: 10-12years

Diet: Slugs, worms, caterpillars, insects including flies and even small mice.

Common toads hunt at night. They catch small prey that moves quickly by flicking their tongue at it, and then catch larger prey with their jaws.

Habitat: Woodland; including coniferous, deciduous and a mixture of both. They're often found it wet locations but can sometimes be found in dry areas too.

Common toads will find a dark covered place to spend the day, then come out at night to look for food.

Did you know? Common toads don't completely hibernate but the do 'overwinter'. They'll find or dig a burrow and spend the winter amongst the mud to conserve their energy. They may briefly emerge in warmer winter spells to look for food.
